These paintings and sculptures of heads are not intended to be portraits of real people. My intention is to evoke sensations and emotions by externalizing internal psychological states that are deeply rooted in our inner selves.
I want to give the viewer an opportunity to experience a deeper emotional state. Because these are personal experiences, each viewer will bring their own perspectives, encountering many different views and sensations.
I invite the viewer to explore the emotions revealed by these images and respond to them. Some may discover fear; others may feel pain or compassion. Some may realize that avoiding their feelings is easiest, although I hope that some will cherish the opportunity to share their emotions and contemplate them even further.

MATHEW ZEFELDT
My work is fueled by an underlying interest in the tension between my adolescent escapist fantasies and the realization of
my own mortality and maturation. I work primarily from the database of the visual culture of my childhood, including comics,
movies, cartoons, and my early drawings of them. These narratives and their characters have provided a venue for expansive experiences
outside of the limitations of my corporeal and tangible situation-functioning in my work as alter egos for myself. Appearing
in my paintings as severed parts of icons, painterly blob mounds, statue heads, monumental rainbow brushstrokes, elemental shapes from drawing
lessons and the ambiguous heap created by lines indicative of the comic, these sources and entities become a metaphor for
the experience of aging and death. The protagonist's body becomes liquefied into gooey painterly abstraction (foreshadowing the mortal's
immanent doom) and situated within barren landscapes and one-point perspective rooms (illustrating a psychological space). Occupying the line between
fiction and nonfiction, the work pulls from my own experience, embellished to the point of non-recognition- an alternate fantastic reality.
